If you’ve been thinking about having professional portraits created of your pet, you may have caught yourself wondering:

When is the right time?

Should you wait until they are fully grown?

Better trained?

Past the puppy phase?

When life feels a little less busy?

At my pet photography studio here in Agoura Hills, this is one of the questions I hear most often - and it usually comes from a place of wanting everything to feel “just right.”

But when it comes to our pets, perfect timing is rarely what matters most.

Because while we are busy living our everyday lives, the years with them have a quiet way of moving faster than we expect.

Is There a Perfect Age for Pet Portraits?

The short answer?

Not really.

There is no single “ideal” stage for portraits - because what we are truly capturing is not age, but personality.

The curious tilt of a head.

The way they lean into you.

The expression you recognize instantly.

The always flicked ear

These are the details that tell the story of who they are right now.

And that is always worth remembering.

Here at my Agoura Hills studio, I often remind clients that the best time is less about waiting for perfection - and more about honoring the season you are already in.

Puppy Portraits: Don’t Wait for Them to Grow

Anyone who has welcomed a puppy into their home knows how quickly the changes happen.

One day they are all oversized paws and playful clumsiness…and before you know it, that tiny version of them exists only in memory.

Many people consider waiting until their puppy is better trained, but the truth is that professional sessions are designed with flexibility and patience in mind.

A little unpredictability is simply part of photographing young personalities - and often, it is exactly where the magic lives.

Puppy portraits don’t just capture how they looked.

They preserve a chapter that passes in the blink of an eye.

Adult Pets: Capturing the Companion You Know So Well

There is something deeply comforting about the years when your pet has grown into themselves.

By now, you know their routines.

Their preferences.

The look they give you when they want something - or when they simply want to be near.

This stage of life often reflects the relationship you have built together, and portraits taken during these years tend to feel especially personal.

Not because anything extraordinary is happening.

But because this is the companion who shares your everyday world.

Senior Pets: A Session People Are Always Grateful For

Photographing a senior pet carries a quiet kind of significance.

There is a softness, a familiarity, and a depth that only time can create.

These sessions are never about focusing on age - they are about honoring a life lived beside you.

Many clients later tell me how grateful they are to have these portraits. Not out of sadness, but out of love.

Because the images become lasting reminders of the bond you shared through so many ordinary days.

If your pet is beginning to slow down or show a little grey, it can be a gentle nudge that now is a beautiful time to create something lasting.

Why So Many People Wish They Had Done It Sooner

There is something I hear often after a session is complete:

“I’m so glad we didn’t wait.”

Rarely do people regret creating portraits.

More often, they regret the years they assumed they still had.

Life with our pets is made up of small, familiar moments - morning greetings, quiet evenings, the sound of paws following you from room to room.

While those days can feel endless, they are also fleeting in the most tender way.

Choosing to document this chapter isn’t about anticipating loss.

It’s about recognizing the love that already fills your home.

So… When Is the Right Time?

The truth is, the right time rarely announces itself.

There doesn’t need to be a milestone.

Or a special occasion.

Or a perfectly trained pet.

Often, the most meaningful reason is simply this:

You love them - exactly as they are, right now.

Whether your companion is young and spirited, settled into adulthood, newly part of your family, or has been by your side for years, every stage holds something worth remembering.

Because one day, these photographs become more than images.

They become the ones that catch your eye as you walk by - bringing back expressions, routines, and the presence that once filled your days.
