Once you begin thinking about scheduling a pet photography session for your pet, it’s only natural to wonder:
How should I prepare?
Should your dog know every command?
What if your pet is full of energy?
What if new places make them unsure?
What if your pet has never had a photo session before?
At my Agoura Hills pet photography studio, I hear these questions often - and my goal is always for you to feel at ease long before you ever step through the door.
Because preparation isn’t about perfection.
It’s simply about helping your pet feel comfortable enough to be themselves.
And that is where the most beautiful portraits begin.

You Don’t Need a Perfectly Trained Pet
Let’s start with the concern I hear most:
“My dog won’t sit still.”
“My cat does whatever she wants.”
“My rescue is very nervous.”
Please know - this is completely normal.
Professional pet photography sessions are designed with patience and flexibility in mind.
A little movement, curiosity, or even a touch of chaos is all part of photographing real personalities.
Your pet doesn’t need flawless manners. In fact, many pets forget their commands the moment they enter a new environment - and that is perfectly okay.
What they need most is the space to settle in at their own pace, because it’s often in those unplanned moments that the expressions you know and love naturally come through.

Your Role During the Session
One thing that often surprises clients is how helpful their presence is throughout the session.
Most pets who come to my studio have never been photographed professionally before, and your gentle assistance plays an important role in helping them feel safe, engaged, and understood.
You may find yourself encouraging them, guiding their attention, or helping adjust positions so I can capture them at their very best.
Think of it less as “handling” your pet and more as supporting them while they experience something new.
We simply work together to help your pet feel comfortable - and that’s when their real personality begins to show.
If you’re unable to assist physically, I recommend bringing along another adult who knows your pet well and can step in comfortably when needed.
Bringing More Than One Pet
If you plan to include two or more pets, having an extra set of hands makes the experience smoother for everyone. While one pet is being photographed, another can be supervised nearby, allowing the session to remain calm and unhurried.
Pets from the same household are always welcome, and creating portraits of them together can be especially meaningful.

What to Expect During Your Pet Photography Session
Studio sessions are thoughtfully paced and typically last up to 90 minutes, allowing plenty of time for your pet to settle in, take breaks when needed, and move through the experience without feeling rushed.
Using gentle studio lighting and a simple backdrop, the focus stays exactly where it belongs - on your beautiful pet and the details that make them uniquely yours.
Start the Day Calm
Before your session, try to keep your pet’s routine as normal and relaxed as possible.
After photographing many pets over the years, I’ve noticed that sessions often unfold most smoothly when pets arrive relaxed and comfortable, rather than overly tired.
While it can be tempting to plan extra activity beforehand, many pets do best when the day begins gently and without too much exercise.
A short, unhurried outing to relieve themselves is perfectly fine - but there is no need for a long walk or vigorous play right beforehand.
We want your pet feeling settled rather than spent, with their natural expression, bright eyes, and personality fully present.
When they start the session comfortable and at ease, everything tends to unfold more smoothly from there.

Bring a Few Favorites From Home
Sometimes, bringing a favorite toy or blanket from home is all it takes for your pet to feel more at ease.
Consider bringing:
• A favorite toy
• A blanket with familiar scents
• High-value treats they truly love
• Or even a favorite outfit
These small comforts help many pets relax more quickly or spark their attention - and sometimes they even become a meaningful part of the portraits themselves.
There is something especially personal about including an object that already belongs to your shared life.
Try to Keep the Day Stress-Free
Pets are smart. They often pick up on our energy more than we realize.
On the day of your session, aim for a peaceful routine if possible. Avoid last-minute rushing, and allow yourself plenty of time to arrive without stress.
When you feel calm, your pet is far more likely to feel the same.
Your pet doesn’t have to do anything perfectly. The session unfolds gently, with breaks whenever they are needed.

A Studio Designed With Your Pet in Mind
Many clients are surprised by how quickly their pets settle once they arrive.
A professional pet portrait studio is intentionally structured to be quiet, safe, and free from the unpredictable distractions we often encounter outdoors.
Doors remain secure.
The pace is unhurried.
Your pet is always guided with care.

You Are Part of What Makes Them Feel Safe
One of the greatest sources of reassurance for your pet is simple:
you.
Your presence tells them this new place is nothing to worry about.
During the session, you’ll be close by - offering encouragement, familiar cues, and the quiet connection they look for naturally.
Pets don’t need to understand the camera.
They just need to know their person is near.

Let Go of the Idea of “Perfect”
Some of the most loved portraits come from moments that were never planned.
A curious head tilt.
An alert expression.
The way they glance toward you without thinking.
The always flicked ear.
Great portraits are never rushed - and often, a little unpredictability is exactly what allows personality to shine.
Your pet doesn’t need to perform.
They simply need to be who they already are.
What Truly Matters Most
Preparation isn’t about controlling every detail.
It’s about creating the space for your faithful, furry friend’s true nature to appear - the expressions, habits, and presence that make them so deeply yours.
Because one day, these photographs won’t just show what they looked like.
They will remind you what life felt like with them by your side.
